Earlier this week, James and I represented the company at the Careers in Focus show over the road at the Great Yorkshire Showground. For those of you who are unaware of the show, it’s an opportunity for young individuals looking to view career opportunities available once they finish school, college and/or university.
It was our aim to inspire youngsters interested in pursuing a career in digital and provide them with some guidance on how to get into the line of work.
We’d set up a couple of fun activities, one being some cool user testing on a few sites such as Kerrang and NME, where the youngsters could have a look around the sites and spot any errors, defects and usability issues and log them on an activity sheet. The other activity was to have a play around on codeacademy.com and learn a little about basic code.
It was great to see how many keen individuals took part. After an early start, we set up the 9xb stand among the likes of local businesses Fodder, Ladies in Pigs, Black Sheep Brewery and many more.
A lot of the attendees were from local towns, flaunting their businesses and looking to share their profession with others in aid to interest others in what they do. There were plenty of animals about too, with a farmer clippering one of his cow’s hair, and a vets letting people hold tarantulas and snakes.
With activities such as pizza making, apple tasting, driving toy cars and holding birds of prey, there was plenty of entertainment for the School children to part take in and experience first-hand.
One of our personal favourites was the mighty impressive Drax stand, full of exciting and fun tasks as well as showcasing how important the plant is – They had full scaled down models of both the PowerStation and the turbines too!
Overall, the turnout was impressive, and it was great to see the amount of local companies taking part. The choice of a career is very important and we hope we've helped go some way to inspiring the next generation into choosing an exciting career in digital!
